What this is
Restorative yoga uses props to support your body in positions of comfort and ease. You settle into a handful of shapes, help up by bolsters, blankets and blocks, and stay in each one long enough for your body to stop bracing itself for the next thing.
What makes this practice different is the spaciousness and support. With two hours, and only eight students in the room, I work with each of you individually: adjusting props, supporting your body and helping you find the version of each shape that works for your body. Nobody is left alone on the mat wondering if they could be more comfortable.
You won't find a two hour restorative practice anywhere else around here. The extra time matters - it takes most people ten minutes or more just to begin relaxing, so a short class often ends right as the real rest starts. Here, savasana along is at least 20 minutes, every single time.
Why rest is a practice
Rest and sleep are physiologically different, and most of us get very little real rest. Stress keeps the brain's alert systems switched on, and the body follows: tight muscles, shallow breath, a stomach that won't settle.
Restorative yoga gives your nervous system the conditions it needs to downshift: stillness, quiet, warmth, darkness and a felt sense of safety. In that state, your body can do what it's built to do between the demands of your day - rest, digest and repair. A regular practice can improve the quality of your sleep, and over time it builds resilience. Stress still shows up, but it has less power to push you around.
Touch and consent
Hands-on support is part of this practice. It is also always your choice.
I will always ask before I touch or adjust you, every single time, and I'll tell you where: "May I touch your shoulder?". If you say yes, I'll tell you what I'm going to do before I do it. You can say no, or change your mind partway through, and your practice won't be any less supported. I'll simply use props and words instead.
Feeling safe is part of how the body learns to relax, so asking first is built into how I teach.
Who is this for?
People who are tired in a way that sleep doesn't touch
Anyone who wants personal attention and hands-on help in a small group practice
Folks who have never done yoga, or who have felt out of place in yoga rooms
Every body: any size, age, ability or level of flexibility. Every shape is set up to fit you (though the ability to get on and off the floor is super helpful)
Anyone whose work keeps them on their feet or holding other people up all day - service work, healing work, parenting, physical labor
Any human existing in the world
What to expect
Arrive 15 minutes early to get settled
We start on time, so please arrive no later than 5 minutes before the listed start time. Due to the nature of the practice, late arrivals will not be accommodated
We'll start with a short check in and centering work together
We move through a few long-help, supported shapes. I demonstrate the shape first, then come around to each of you to help with setup and adjustments
We always close with savasana, for a minimum of 20 minutes, in quiet. I don't talk during savasana.
We end of time, so you can ease into the rest of your day without rushing
You can shift, come out of a shape, wave me over or step out any time.
What to bring
Bolsters, blocks and other props are all provided. Please bring:
One blanket from home to cover yourself during savasana (or any of the other shapes we take)
Something to cover your eyes. An eye bag is great, but a washcloth or small towel works just as well.
Softer layers, socks and water
